Diatomaceous Earth, and Why You Should Eat It Too

Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Have you ever heard of it? Google it, and you will find all sorts of information on how you can use it on your livestock, in your pets, around your house and lots of other places where you want to kill pests and parasites.

DE is basically fossilized microscopic algae. On a hardness scale, diamonds are a 9 and DE is a 7. DE is a mineral-based compound that contains silicon, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron and other trace minerals. In fact, DE is 85% amorphous silica. I bet you also didn’t know that in 1939, the Nobel Prize winner for chemistry, Professor Adolf Butenandt proved that life on earth cannot exist without silica.

DE works on a purely physical level, not a chemical one, so you never have to be concerned about chemical toxicity. :) Because it does not act on a chemical level, parasites have no way to build an immunity to it!

(Okay, I keep talking about parasites. I am guessing that if you are reading this, you are in the good old US of A, and think “I am American, I don’t have internal parasites. My food is irradiated, and my water is cleaned in a facility somewhere before it gets piped into my house.” Sorry to burst your bubble, but most people have a lot of stuff going on in their digestive tract that they just don’t know about. Years of build-up can reduce your body’s effectiveness at nutrient absorption for starters… And I won’t go into the bug stuff, you can look that up yourself.)

Back to the silica. Because of modern food preparation practices and modern farming practices, most of our food is deficient in silica. Silica is crucial to the body. It is in the bones, tendons, skin, cartilage, blood vessels, even the blood itself. It can also be found in the liver, heart and lungs. The average human body SHOULD have a higher concentration of silica than even iron.

Silica is water soluble, meaning that it does not accumulate in the body. It is something that needs to be ingested on a regular basis in order to have a healthy impact. It has been estimated that DE is beneficial to humans, plants and other animals in over 1,500 ways! Some of these benefits include lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, relief from arthritis pain, increased energy, more regular bowel movements, smoother complexion, sinus and cough relief, softer hair, needing less sleep, better quality of sleep.

As a daily supplement, DE can help scour the intestinal walls, ridding them of internal parasites and helping to detox the body. DE is considered one of the best chelating products available for pulling heavy metals from the blood stream.

So now that I’ve given you a few reasons why DE is so great, let me give you a brief synopsis on how it works, and then some hints on how to take it yourself.

DE works primarily in three ways.

1. DE’s physical structure is honeycomb-like. This gives it a very strong negative charge. As these cylinders move through the digestive tract, they attract and absorb bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses, endotoxins, pesticides, drug residues, E-Coli and heavy metals. All of these things get trapped in the cell structure of the DE and passed out of the body. Additionally, any larger parasites or worms that don’t fit within the cell structure of the DE are “cut up” and/or killed by the sharp edges.

2. As mentioned earlier, DE is structurally very hard. All these sharp little bits scrub the intestinal walls clean (without damaging the intestines). After taking DE for a while, say, on a daily basis for a few months, the intestine walls are no longer coated with molds, mucous and other junk. This means a shiny new colon! A clean colon means prevention of polyps, cancers, ulcers and a continued TOXIFICATION of the body through build-up. A clean colon and clean intestine walls also means better nutrient absorption by the bloodstream.

3. A small amount of DE gets absorbed into the bloodstream, helping to scrub the vessels free of plaque. As the DE breaks down in the blood stream, all the additional healthful benefits of the silica can then be realized.

This stuff sounds amazing, doesn’t it?? So now you want to know how to take it and where to get it, huh?

FIRST and FOREMOST. Please make sure that you get FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH. Anything else is not meant to be taken internally by humans OR animals.

Second, it CAN be taken during pregnancy. But it is recommended that pregnant women start slowly so they don’t have to much of a detoxification at the beginning of use. So, for you pregos out there like me, we start with 1 tsp daily for a week, then  2 tsp, then it is probably safe to go to the daily amount of 1 tablespoon.

For everyone else, the recommended dose 1 tsp before meals, 3x day. Mr. Ewe takes 1 tablespoon first thing in the morning and gets it out of the way for the rest of the day. I have heard of others taking it right before bed so it has a chance to do its job while the body rests. I think as long as you are taking it, when and how don’t matter as much.

I prefer to take mine in the morning with my shake. Drink it fast, there isn’t much taste, but it is pretty gritty and it settles to the bottom of the cup, So unless you feel like eating a spoonful of grit when you get to the bottom of your cup, drink fast or keep mixing.

I have a question. I just ordered food grade DE from a herd store and by the time it shipped to my house I found out I was pregnant. My question is what time of day is best to take this? I am on a natural thyroid medication (armour) and a prenatal. Will this interfere with or remove those from my body?

I can’t tell you what you should do as I am not a medical professional. I think you should discuss this with your midwife or obstetrician.
